This seventeenth-century Baroque sculpture is a hand-carved limewood figure of a female saint. The carved limewood possesses a dark brown patina with traces of the original polychrome decoration remaining across the surface. The female saint wears deeply carved, voluminous draped robes that sweep across the body, and her hair is rendered in fine sculpted strands falling down her back. The figure stands atop an octagonal base with moulded detailing near the bottom edge. One arm is broken and partially missing at the elbow, revealing the bare timber underneath, while the opposite arm extends with a broken hand. The wood shows general surface wear, dark weathering, and historical marks consistent with age and handling. The sculpture stands 20.5 cm high. This tactile devotional object suits display on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or collector cabinet within a study, living room, or hallway setting in a traditional home.

Sculptures from this period typically display expressive movement, deep drapery folds, and realistic human proportions characteristic of Baroque influence. They were commissioned for churches or private devotional use and crafted by skilled woodcarvers across Continental Europe.

Limewood possesses a fine, even grain and soft texture that allows for intricate carving without splitting. Its structure made it the preferred timber for European sculptors executing detailed drapery and facial features.

Authentic period pieces exhibit historic tool marks, age-related shrinkage along the wood grain, authentic wear to high points, and traces of original ground or polychrome paint layer within deep crevices.

Carved figures function well as tactile focal points on bookshelves, mantels, or console tables. Pairing aged timber with minimalist backgrounds or modern glass and metal elements highlights the sculptures historical patina.

Dust gently using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush, avoiding commercial chemical polishes or water. Keep the object in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking or warping.
