Size: 2ft 9in x 11in (83 x 27cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen torba / mafrash, face of a small storage bag.

Circa 1880.

This small Tekke Turkmen torba / mafrash is a small bag used for keeping personal belongings in, it was usually hung up inside the yurt. This example is of 'aina' gul design, there are four rows of three box like guls containing the kotchak design. The bag is complete with its original plain weave back which has a 'smoked' feel from being hung up inside a family yurt for many years. There are also the remains of the original long tassels.

The bag is in good condition with slight even wear and good pile and corrosion, there is an old repair to the top left hand corner.

A good display item that could be hung on a wall or used on top of a table or chest.

A torba or mafrash is a small, rectangular woven storage bag traditionally crafted by nomadic Tekke Turkmen tribes of Central Asia to hold personal belongings and household items within a yurt.

These textiles were hand-knotted using finely spun wool pile onto a wool warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural vegetable dyes to achieve shades of deep red, terracotta, navy, and ivory.

Authentic Tekke pieces exhibit dense, fine asymmetric knotting, supple wool, natural dye variation, geometric gul motifs arranged in structured rows, and intact plain-weave back panels.

A Turkmen torba can be mounted on a wall as framed textile art, displayed along a console table or mantelpiece, or filled and converted into a decorative floor cushion.
