Post-impressionist Floral Still Life Oil Painting, Dated 1896

19th century
For Sale by Pareglio & Ayres Antiques Interiors (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

An original late 19th century period floral still life oil painting on canvas stitched or glued onto a board (canvas board or doek op karton), dated 1896.

The composition features a central green ceramic jug holding a bouquet of red gladioli. In the foreground sits a pocket watch or a compass in a wooden case alongside a small book.

The work is executed in a heavy impasto technique with a dark, muted tonal palette typical of late 19th-century Continental or Dutch post-impressionist intense colour genre. Also the signature style, although unidentifiable, suggests a Dutch or North European regional hand.

The painting is signed in the lower right above the clear date of 1896 and is housed in its period, rustic molded wooden frame.

The paint layer exhibits widespread, natural age-related craquelure throughout, consistent with its late-19th-century origin. The frame is structurally sound, showing light wear, surface scuffs, and minor separation at the mitered corners appropriate for its age.

Post-Impressionist still life paintings emerged in the late 19th century as artists moved beyond the mere imitation of light. The style emphasizes bold colour palettes, expressive brushwork, structured compositions, and symbolic arrangements of everyday objects and botanical elements.

Late 19th-century artworks were typically executed using oil pigments bound with linseed oil, applied to hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas, or solid wooden panels. Frames were predominantly constructed from carved wood, often layered with plaster moulding and finished with gold leaf gilding or paint.

Authentic paintings from this period exhibit natural age patterns, including fine surface cracking known as craquelure, uniform canvas age, oxidisation on the timber frame, and historical signatures or dates. Inspection of the stretcher bars, canvas weave, and tacking edges also helps confirm period construction.

Position the artwork above a wooden sideboard or console table to create a focal point in a dining room or hallway. Combining classic oil paintings with contemporary furniture creates a refined, curated interior contrast that highlights the rich tones of the canvas.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent pigment fading and canvas warping. Gently dust the frame with a soft, dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, and consult a professional restorer for surface cleaning or canvas tensioning.
