Large Masons Ironstone Jug and Basin

Description

A large immaculate Victorian Masons Ironstone jug and basin c.1880. The large circular basin with flat panelled effect exterior and scalloped rim; decorated inside and out with blue transfer print and overpainted with colours to enhance the design. The matching jug in classical Masons style with decoration to match the bowl. Both pieces with matching Masons factory marks to the base. The set presented in immaculate condition with no damage or repairs. Keep up to date via our Instagram channel - sturmansantiques. Basin measures 16" diameter x 6" high, jug measures 9" diameter for the vessel x 11" wide including the handle x 11.5" high.

Masons Patent Ironstone China was patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England. Developed as a durable and economical alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, ironstone was widely produced for utilitarian domestic items, including washstand ewers and basins throughout the nineteenth century.

Ironstone ceramics were made from a dense earthenware body containing ground flint, clay, and slag, fired at high temperatures to achieve strength and water resistance. Designs were applied using underglaze transfer printing, often hand-finished with polychrome enamels and gilded highlights on handles and rims.

Authentic pieces generally bear impressed or printed backmarks on the base, typically featuring a crown alongside the text Masons Patent Ironstone China. Original nineteenth-century examples display distinct physical weight, sharp octagonal or faceted body mouldings, and heavy cobalt blue transfer detailing.

These large ceramic sets function well as central decorative statements on a sideboard, console table, or deep window ledge. The ewer can also be displayed independently to hold branches or dried floral arrangements, bringing historic pattern into contemporary scheme.
