Antique Coloured Lithograph Parrot Perruce a Face Bleu

19th century
Description

This is a fabulously vibrant original colour lithograph of a blue faced parrot dating from around 1800.

From 1801-1805, François Levaillant and Jacques Barraband collaborated on the world’s best-known natural history work about parrots, Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets.

In this work, the birds seem to glow on the paper, giving off an inner vitality that comes from a brilliant use of color, a near-perfect rendering of feathers, and a breathtaking mastery of the printing process.

Barraband collaborated with Louis Bouquet and Langlois to create the engravings. The plates were then inked à la poupée (several of the same plates were inked with different colors carefully applied one over the other, as in modern color printing) then pulled from the press. Tonalities and shading were then added by hand.

This work is attractively framed in a good 19th century frame that measures 43 cms by 35 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique ornithological lithograph is a paper print produced through a planographic printing process, depicting birds with scientific accuracy, which gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Early lithographs were printed from limestone plates using oily inks on rag paper, after which detailed colours were applied either by hand using watercolours or through multi-stone chromolithography.

Authentic antique lithographs typically feature hand-drawn plate inscriptions or French typography, paper showing age-appropriate toning or plate marks, and fine line work distinct from modern digital dot patterns.

These prints add depth and character when hung in a symmetry-focused gallery wall arrangement, placed above a sideboard, or set against dark paint in a traditional study.

Display prints away from direct sunlight and high humidity, using UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials to prevent fading and discolouration.
