Antique Tribal Saddle Bag, Central Asia, Circa 1890, 45cm X 55cm

Description

Dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, this unusual saddle bagface was probably made by an Ersari weaver in the Middle Amu Darya region of Central Asia, in or around the Town of Beshir on the borders of modern Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Finely worked with an asymmetric knot open to the right, it has very soft wool and exceptional natural dyes. The curled leaf design in the field is unusual as it is normally seen in borders, The main border is beautifully drawn with touches of lovely greens and yellows. Note too the the elem or additional skirt at the bottom end with a reciprocal design of repeating ram's horns on white and red backgrounds. Delightful! This is an exquisite example of Turkoman weaving. One for the collectors.
