Many Persian rugs produced in Sultanabad region of West Persia between 1890 and 1920 have been mistakenly described as ''Ziegler'' rugs, a reference to the Manchester-based Anglo-Swiss company Ziegler and Co. that produced and ordered some outstanding rugs and carpets during that period. However, this wonderful piece from around 1880 might well be the real deal. Finely knotted with Manchester wool, a characteristic of many Ziegler weavings, the colours are subtle while the design is elegant and harmonious. Note the lovely aquamarine colour in the border which is really delightful. The repeat lattice design in the field is filled with a variety of ornaments which creates a sense of movememnt and vivacity. The pile has been cropped low which gives the design greater definition. Note the slight corrosion in the drown dye, a clear indication of a 19th century dating. Cherished through the generations, this lovely piece has survived in excellent condition.
