This early nineteenth-century Scottish School oil painting on canvas depicts a noblewoman in a cream-coloured Empire-waist dress set against an atmospheric dark brown background, wearing a gold tiara headpiece and striking a defiant pose. The portrait is housed within a gilded leaf wood frame featuring carved mouldings and losses to the gilding concentrated around the sides, while the canvas itself has been cleaned and relined. Measuring 74 cm high and 62 cm wide, with overall dimensions of 84 cm by 72 cm including the frame, the artwork is presented in a grand Regency style. It suits placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway to add historical character to a period interior.

Regency portraiture from the early nineteenth century is characterised by neoclassical dress, Empire-line silhouettes, subdued lighting, and restrained compositions inspired by classical antiquity.

Portraits from this period were typically painted in oil on woven linen or hemp canvas, stretched across wooden stretcher bars, and framed in hand-carved or moulded timber with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period works display age-consistent craquelure across the paint surface, natural canvas oxidisation on the reverse, and traditional construction marks on the wooden stretcher.

Positioning a period portrait above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece creates a refined focal point, bridging traditional artwork with modern minimalist design.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, dust the frame gently with a dry brush, and consult a professional art conservator for cleaning.
