Arthur Reginald Smith "Quiet Waters" Wharfedale, Watercolour

Description

Arthur Reginald Smith (1871-1934) was born in Skipton, Yorkshire, and grew up in nearby Threshfield. From an early age he wanted to become an artist. However he was educated at a County Congregational school which devoted little time to drawing and was discouraged from his artistic ambitions by his parents. Becoming an elementary teacher, at their insistence, he studied art in evening classes at Keighley School of Art and spent his holidays sketching.

Once his artistic talents were properly recognised, he gained a place in the Painting School of the Royal College of Art (1901-4) and was awarded a travel scholarship which enabled him to travel to Italy (1906). Augustus Spencer, the College Principal, then found him teaching positions at schools in London, and he supplemented this work by running art classes at Leighton House.

He is now regarded as one of the finest painters of the Yorkshire Dales and exhibited at leading London venues including the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and also in the provinces and abroad.

"Quiet Waters" is a watercolour measuring 12" x 20". It is signed lower right and is in the original quality mount and frame giving an overall size of 22"x 30". On the back is a nice original label giving the title "Quiet Waters" and the artist's address at "Farfield Grassington".

This movement focused on capturing light, atmospheric conditions, and natural rural topography across Britain. Artists employed fluid washes, subtle colour gradations, and tonal restraint to evoke mood and sense of place.
