Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair cased pocket watch consists of a movement housed in an inner protective case, which fits inside a separate outer protective case. Popular from the seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries, this construction protected delicate horological mechanisms from dust and moisture.

These timepieces were commonly constructed from sterling silver or gold, featuring raised metal numerals surrounded by recessed ground, a technique known as champleve. Hands were typically fashioned from steel, brass, or gold.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples feature distinct period hallmarks on both inner and outer cases, hand-engraved maker signatures on the dial or movement, and period-accurate escapements such as verge fusee movements.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed under a glass cloche on a bookshelf, mounted within a shadow box frame, or suspended from a dedicated pocket watch stand on a desk or mantelpiece.

Store the timepiece in a dry environment with low humidity to prevent silver oxidation and movement corrosion. Clean exterior silver surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid polishes near the movement and dial.
