Animalier sculpture refers to the realistic depiction of animals, which gained immense popularity in 19th-century France, particularly through the works of artists working in bronze during the Romantic period.

Most 19th-century bronze sculptures were produced using the lost-wax method (cire perdue) or sand casting, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details and the application of a chemical patina.

Authentic pieces typically feature crisp foundry marks, artist signatures cast directly into the base, appropriate wear to the patina corresponding to age, and heavy, solid metal construction rather than hollow modern resin copies.

An antique bronze sculpture can be placed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or side table to add historical depth and tactile texture, contrasting cleanly against minimalist modern architectural backgrounds.

Antique bronze should be gently dusted with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and occasionally treated with microcrystalline wax to protect the patina, avoiding all harsh chemical cleaners and water.
