Erskine Nicol was a Scottish figure and genre painter born in Leith in 1825. He taught in Dublin Ireland from 1845-1850 at the height of the Irish famine and identified with the oppression of the Irish people. Much of his work portrays the injustices inflicted on the Irish population during the 19th century as well as everyday Irish life.

This fine portrait is from the circle of his followers and the style of the work very much emulates his craft.
This picture measures 55 cms by 48 cms overall including the frame.
