FAQs

Neoclassical gilt bronze figures gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, drawing inspiration from the archaeological discoveries of ancient Greece and Rome. These pieces often depict mythological deities and classical heroes, reflecting the eras fascination with classical antiquity and humanism.

These pieces are typically crafted using the lost-wax casting method (cire perdue) to achieve intricate detail in the bronze or brass alloy. The surface is then treated with mercury gilding (ormolu) or electroplating to apply a rich layer of gold, which is often burnished and chased by hand.

Authentication involves examining the casting quality, chisel marks, and the wear patterns on the gilding. Older pieces typically feature hand-chased surface details, patination consistent with age, and construction methods characteristic of historical foundry practices rather than modern mass production.

These sculptures serve as sophisticated focal points when placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table. Their metallic finish and classical motifs complement both traditional study environments and minimalist contemporary spaces by adding texture, history, and sculptural depth.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoiding chemical cleaners, abrasives, or polishes that can strip the delicate gold layer. Maintaining a stable indoor humidity prevents oxidisation and protects the underlying metal alloy.
