Late 19th Century Indian Brass Dhal Shield with Engraved Foliate Decoration

19th century
Description

A good original example of an Indian brass dhal shield, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1910.

Of convex form with four domed bosses, the surface is extensively decorated with finely engraved and punched foliate scrollwork and circular reserves, typical of Indo-Persian inspired ornament produced in North Indian workshops. The central roundel and surrounding panels display stylised motifs, consistent with decorative examples of the period.

The reverse retains its suspension rings and a later fabric backing pad, with cord straps now present. The shield shows honest surface wear and patination, consistent with age, and remains an attractive display piece.

Condition Report:

• General surface wear, rubbing and patination throughout

• No visible splits or structural damage to the body

• Reverse pad and cord are later replacements

• Fixings appear secure, with expected age-related wear

• Some minor surface marks and light tarnishing.

Please note:

This item is sold as a historical antique. All photographs form part of the description and condition.

Measurements:

• Diameter: 37 cm

• Weight: 1.50 kg

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A dhal is a traditional convex circular shield originating from the Indian subcontinent, historically crafted for personal defence and ceremonial use.

Dhal shields were made from materials such as cast metal including brass, iron, or steel, as well as hardened animal hide, frequently embellished with metal bosses and surface engraving.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces display hand-chased or hand-engraved surface patterns, natural oxidisation in low relief areas, and evidence of hand-hammered forming techniques.

Mounting the circular metal form on a wall introduces historic texture and warm metallic tones, making it an ideal focal point above a console table or within a curated wall display.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina; apply a thin coat of microcrystalline wax to protect the metal.
