Edwardian Street Scene Watercolour Leicester Square London with the Empire Theatre by Charles James Lauder RSW 1841-1920

A lovely nostalgic scene showing Leicester Square as it was during the 19th and early 20th Century, highlighting the wonderful Empire Theatre which opened in 1884.

Painted with pleasing colours and good attention to detail with figures, horses and carriages going about daily life. One could study this scene for ages.

Painting unglazed and signed lower right. Presented within a gilt frame which bears small losses, with cream mount.

Charles James Lauder was the son on John Thompson Lauder, portrait artist and relative of Robert Scott Lauder who was a tutor to many distinguished Scottish artists. Charles studies at the Glasgow School of Art under C Heath Wilson and Robert Greenlees. He is best known for London street scenes and Venetian subjects but also painted marine and architectural studies. He was elected RSW in 1685 and resigned in 1913.

The Empire Theatre opened on 17 April 1884 under the ownership of Daniel Nicols as a West End variety theatre on Leicester Square, as well as a ballet venue, with a capacity of about 2,000 seats.

The first performance was Chilperic, with music by Herve, adapted by H. Hersee and H. B. Farnie and was described as a Grand Musical Spectacular, in three acts and seven tableaux. The corps de ballet for the performance was 50 strong. Edward Solomon and Sydney Grundy premièred their comic opera, Pocahontas or The Great White Pearl, another Solomon opera, Polly or The Pet of the Regiment transferred here, and his Billee Taylor was revived here, all in 1884.

The Empire was rebuilt for films in the 1920’s and today serves as a cinema, currently operated by Cineworld.
