FAQs

Aquatint is an intaglio etching technique that creates tonal areas rather than sharp lines by applying acid to a copper plate prepared with powdered rosin. Popular in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was widely used for reproducing watercolour landscapes, coastal views, and architectural illustrations.

Nineteenth-century aquatints were created using etched copper plates printed onto cotton or linen rag paper. The resulting black or sepia prints were frequently finished by hand using watercolour washes applied by specialized colourists.

Authentic period aquatints feature a distinct plate mark indentation pressed into the heavy paper surrounding the image. Under magnification, the print displays a characteristic soft, granular dot matrix created by the rosin ground, along with period publication lines beneath the image.

Arranging a set of six prints in a symmetrical two-by-three grid creates a strong focal point above a console table or sideboard. Matching frames with uniform mount margins provide architectural structure and complement traditional, coastal, or contemporary schemes.
