George III 18th Century Bowfront Mahogany Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

A Good Quality George III Period Late 18th Century Mahogany Bowfronted Chest, Having Well Figured Top With Ebonised Strung Decoration To Edge, Over Three Long Drawers, With Replacement Oval Brass Plate Handles, Raised On Elegant Original Splayed Bracket Feet And Shaped Apron.

A good quality and practical georgian mahogany bow front chest of drawers which is slightly better quality than many which can be found from a similar period, whilst being significantly more affordable than earlier examples.

From a practicality perspective it is a great size, which opens up the possibility of being able to use it in a much wider selection of environments and it would even make a fabulous bedside chest of drawers.

The brass handles are replacements, it has had various handles and knobs in place previously, but the current oval plates sit nicely on the chest and add to the overall elegance of the piece. It also retains its original splay bracket feet which are a little taller than normal, allowing for the shaped apron and meaning the chest stands up very proudly with additional elegance.

As with all items which we offer for sale this antique chest of drawers has been inspected and attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restoration specialists and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III bowfront chest of drawers originates from the late 18th to early 19th century in Britain, characterised by a convex curved front profile, flame mahogany veneers, and symmetrical drawer configurations.

These chests were constructed using primary timber veneers of West Indian or Cuban mahogany over secondary softwood carcasses, often accented with brass oval backplate handles and oak or pine drawer linings.

Authentic period chests exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original wood shrinkage, hand-cut brass ironmongery, and natural oxidisation on the interior drawer timber and underside frame.

Position the piece as an entryway console or bedroom focal point, paired with contemporary abstract artwork, minimal ceramic vessels, or modern table lamps to balance historical and current aesthetics.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the finish.
