Early 20th Century Mahogany Office Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

An early 20th-century mahogany office cabinet, likely used within a legal practice or institutional setting.

The cabinet is constructed in solid mahogany and stands on shaped bracket feet, fitted with four panelled doors arranged in two tiers. Each door retains its deep red glass panels, reverse-painted and gilt with the wording “Farrer and Co – Barristers – Solicitors”, suggesting the cabinet was either purpose-made for, or later adapted to, a named legal firm.

This office cabinet has a restrained architectural form, enhanced by the dentil-style cornice detail, a subtle but decorative touch that lifts the overall piece without overpowering it.

Originally intended for use in an office, chambers, or institutional environment rather than a retail setting, the cabinet today lends itself beautifully as statement storage in a study, library, office, or characterful interior.

We believe that the hand painted writing has been retouched over the years, or added later on.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, professional institutions such as law firms, banks, and corporate practices commissioned specialized wooden furniture to store client records and legal deeds. These pieces often featured hand-painted or gold-leaf typography on door panels to identify the business or department.

Commercial cabinets from this era were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak. Decorative door panels frequently incorporated painted wood, toughened glass, brass hardware, and hand-gilded lettering using gold leaf.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, solid timber backboards, period-correct brass fittings, and signs of natural wear around the base and handles. Gilded lettering usually demonstrates slight variations typical of hand-painted signwriting rather than modern printed stencils.

These cabinets function well as statement storage pieces in home offices, studies, or dining spaces. Combining dark timber and gilded typography with neutral walls and leather seating highlights the historical character of the piece.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax polish along the grain to maintain the wood moisture. Avoid harsh solvents or abrasive cleansers over gilded lettering and painted panels to prevent wear to the historic paintwork.
