Rare George III trompe l''oeil and rosewood occasional table; original painted top of interesting subject; the oval trompe l''oeil decorated top depicting a gentleman''s literacy objects including bank notes, a quill and books. Housed in a bronze moulded frame. The hinged lid revealing a shallow paper lined compartment with original working lock and key; the rosewood frame, raised on square tapering kick out legs, all inlaid with fine boxwood stringing. The elegant legs united by an ebonised turned ''x'' stretcher.
 
The painted top depicting The London Magazine, or Gentleman''s Monthly Intelligencer (founded 1732) was a popular 18th-century British periodical designed as a ''storehouse'' of information for educated readers. It covered literature, politics, arts, philosophy, and history, functioning as a monthly digest of news, reviews, and general interest topics.
