Oil Painting Of The Ship Flying Cloud By Daniel Sherrin 1868-1940
£695 $931 €797
A fine oil on canvas by the artist Daniel Sherrin (1868-1940) depicting the ship Flying Cloud at sea. The work dramatically depicts the ship sailing directly towards the viewer under full sail. The Flying Cloud was a clipper ship that set the world''s sailing record for the fastest passage between New York and San Francisco, 89 days 8 hours. The ship held this record for over 135 years, from 1854 to 1989. The painting is in good untouched condition, there are a few minor marks, touching in and some varnish discolouration. The painting is signed to the bottom right, has a title mount to the frame, and a full label and description from the Vicars Brothers gallery of London, the original retailers of the work. Daniel Sherrin 1868-1940 was a painter best known for his depictions of landscapes, maritime scenes, and the countryside of Norfolk and Suffolk. His work is highly detailed, describing objects such as ships and cattle accurately while maintaining a sense of light and atmosphere. Bor...n in 1868 in Brentwood, England, Sherrin first studied painting and drawing with his father, the artist John Sherrin. The younger Sherrin went on to notably produce a commissioned work for King George V, painting his country estate Sandringham House—a work that still hangs in Buckingham Palace to this day. During the First World War, the artist helped design recruitment posters, and his efforts are now housed in the archives of the Imperial War museum. Sherrin’s work can be found in mostly British museum collections, including the Bury Art Museum and the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum in Claughton. He died in 1940 in England. Sherrin was a very commercial artist and doesn’t seem to have exhibited widely, his works were heavily influenced by popular artists of the day with his landscapes inspired by Leader and his maritime works by early Montague Dawson. This work is very much in the style of Dawson with the sense of drama and movement. The painting is framed in the original fine quality gilt frame which is in very good untouched condition, just some wear to the title plaque. The whole has a great decorative impact and is ready to hang. C.1930.
