Description

This striking piece from the Poltava district of Central Ukraine dates to the end of the 19th century. Ostensibly woven to be hung, the design is composed of a cluster of flowering shrubs in a vertical arrangement on a blue-gray field. The field colour is deliberately abrashed to give a sense of texture and depth. It is a dramatic composition with no secondary motifs to distract the viewer. The border is equally impressive. Generously proportioned, the repeating stylised palmettes and leaves on the abrashed pale blue background are quite stunning. Note too that there is a monogram in the bottom left corner of the border which suggests that this piece may have been made to order for someone important. Poltava kilims are often influenced by European decorative styles, but this piece is firmly in the Ukrainian folk tradition with a very pure drawing of the design. Furthermore the technique is exceptional. The weave is exceptionally fine, interlocking wefts have been employed to ensure a stable structure, and eccentric or 'curved' wefts appear throughout to add texture to the design. Cherished through the generations, this lovely piece is clean and in excellent condition.
