Composition and Technique

The Sitter: Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson (1824–1863)
Born January 21, 1824, in Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia), Jackson was orphaned young and raised in modest circumstances. Despite limited early schooling, he secured admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1842, graduating in 1846 ranked 17th out of 59 cadets.
He served with distinction in the Mexican–American War, receiving brevet promotions for gallantry. In 1851, he became a professor at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), teaching artillery tactics and natural philosophy.
At the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Jackson joined the Confederate Army. His brigade earned the nickname “Stonewall” at the First Battle of Bull Run. His 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign demonstrated rapid manoeuvre and operational mobility that remain studied in military history.
Serving under General Robert E. Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia, Jackson played significant roles in the Seven Days Battles, Second Manassas and Fredericksburg.
In May 1863, after a successful flanking manoeuvre at Chancellorsville, he was accidentally wounded by friendly fire and later died from complications of pneumonia at age 39. His early death contributed to his mythic status within Confederate memory and Civil War historiography. His image became central to American Civil War portraiture, widely reproduced from the Elder composition on which this work is based.
