This early nineteenth-century Regency maritime object comprises a bronze signal cannon barrel mounted on a stepped wooden carriage. The dark brown cast bronze barrel sits atop a dark painted wooden base finished with red undertones visible along the edges and recessed mouldings. The stepped carriage features distinct tiered levels rising towards the rear, decorative carved contours at the front, and painted cyphers alongside a crown on the barrel. Age-related wear manifests as an extensive network of craquelure across the dark painted surfaces, alongside surface crackling and minor paint losses that reveal the underlying timber. Measuring 14 cm high by 15 cm wide and 10 cm deep, this compact decorative piece fits neatly upon a desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf within a gentleman's library, study, or nautical-themed office interior today.

Signal cannons were used aboard ships, at lighthouses, or on coastal estates to sound audible salutes, signal arrivals, or issue warnings in fog without firing live projectile ammunition.

The barrels were cast from bronze or brass for durability and corrosion resistance against sea air, while the stepped carriages were constructed from hard timber, painted or varnished, and fitted with metal mountings.

Authentic examples display foundry marks or touchmarks near the touchhole or trunnions, natural patination, authentic wear patterns around the touchhole from repeated firing, and hand-fitted carriage joinery.

These objects serve as focal decorative accents placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive office desk to introduce texture and historical interest to a study or living room.

Dust the bronze barrel with a soft brush and wipe the painted wooden carriage with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or chemical solvents that could strip the original paint or natural patina.
