Watercolour Silhouette Of Mary Winter
 
A charming and interesting watercolour silhouette of Mary Winter on horseback with her coachman and two dogs.
 
Mary was born in 1752 and went on to marry Ebenezer Maitland (director of the Bank of England in 1798). Their son Ebenezer Fuller Maitland was a leading philanthropist in abolishing slavery.
 
Image three shows a group portrait of the family, painted by Mason Chamberlin R.A. In 1782.
 
To the reverse there is a hand written account of Mary Winter by Mrs Walford, it reads something like this…
 
A rare watercolour silhouette of Mary winter who married Ebenezer Maitland, mother of Ebenezer Fuller Maitland.
 
“What a hardewoman old Mrs Maitland was”.
 
About 1760.
 
She rode to the day of her death, and she died at 90. They tried to stop her, and she did for a little, but one day she saw a butcher’s pony at her door, and took a fancy to have her saddle put on it, and they had it put on her and away she went round the paddock.
