Subject: A finely observed early 19th-century topographical study depicting a narrow mountain gorge with steep rock faces, trees clinging to the slopes, and a river running through the pass. A small foreground figure provides scale, reinforcing the dramatic sense of landscape. The work is executed in pencil with monochrome brown wash, typical of field studies produced by travelling British artists during Continental tours of the Alpine and mountainous regions in the early 1800s. The reverse is inscribed in pencil “View in the Notch”, likely the artist’s original working title.
