Grisaille is a painting technique executed entirely in shades of grey or neutral greyish-brown monochrome, often used for preparatory sketches or to simulate relief sculpture.

Artists during this era typically utilised handmade rag paper, natural pigments ground with gum arabic, and fine animal-hair brushes.

Authentication relies on examining the paper watermark, fibre content, oxidation patterns, pigment analysis, and stylistic consistency with the period.

Framing the piece with a simple, neutral mount and placing it on a gallery wall or a dedicated narrow wall space allows the historic character to stand out without visual clutter.

Works on paper should be kept out of direct sunlight, framed using acid-free archival materials, and displayed in environments with controlled humidity and temperature.
