Antique Afghan Baluch Tribal Rug, Handwoven Wool, Early 20th Century – 7' X 3'8"

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Baluch Tribal Rug, Persian–Afghan Region, Early 20th Century

An early 20th-century Baluch tribal rug from the Persian–Afghan border region, handwoven in wool and dating to around 1920. The design features a compartmentalised field of bold geometric medallions and serrated tribal motifs, articulated by vertical indigo bands and enclosed within a series of finely patterned borders.

Woven with a wool pile on a wool foundation, this rug has a soft, supple handle and the strong graphic character typical of nomadic Baluch work. The lighter ground gives it a more open, decorative feel than many darker Baluch rugs, making it particularly effective in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Both ends retain their fringes and the sides their original selvages.

A characterful antique rug with warmth, individuality, and unmistakable tribal presence — well suited to a living space, bedroom, or study where texture and authenticity are more important than pristine condition.

Dimensions (Approximate):

Length (including fringes): 213.5 cm (7')

Width: 111.5 cm (3'8")

Condition:

Fair, usable condition, consistent with age. Some losses and fraying to the ends and edges, along with light wear to the pile. The colours remain even and rich throughout. Professionally vacuumed, deodorised, and treated for moth prevention — clean and ready for use. As with all antique handmade textiles, there are natural signs of age and use which contribute to its individual character.
