Description

A Signed 1921 Society Female Bust Maquette Sculpture, poss Mitford Sister 40cm.

A fine quality maquette sculpture, plaster cast bust of a female head and neck bust with an indistinct signature to the reverse, clearly marked 1921.

A typical coming of age, debutante sculpture.

A superbly stylish female bust maquette, most probably a preparatory sample pre-bronze, for client approval. The style, technique and hairstyle captures the modern optimism of the period and very much in the Mitford sisters manner.

Presented in excellent structural condition with an elegant timeworn surface patination to authenticate, surface dust and some dirt which we shall leave but any buyer may choose to clean.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A portrait bust is a sculpted representation of a persons head, neck, and upper shoulders, traditionally cast in plaster, bronze, or carved from stone or wood.

Maquettes are preliminary models traditionally sculpted from plaster, clay, wax, or terracotta before being cast in more permanent materials like bronze or marble.

Authentic pieces often show surface wear, minor patination, artist signatures or foundry marks, and traditional construction methods appropriate to the period.

A sculptural bust can be placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table to add classical depth and architectural interest to contemporary spaces.

Plaster sculptures should be kept away from direct moisture and cleaned gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging the fragile surface.
