FAQs

Victorian ships barometers were essential navigational and meteorological instruments used primarily at sea and in coastal homes to predict weather changes by measuring atmospheric pressure. Whitby became particularly renowned for producing robust maritime barometers due to its rich seafaring heritage.

These instruments typically featured solid turned oak or mahogany frames, heavy brass bezels, and silvered or enamelled brass dials protected by glass. The internal mechanics utilised aneroid or mercury systems connected to precise metal linkages.

Authenticity is identified through hand-carved wooden cases showing natural ageing, original thick bevelled or curved glass, hand-engraved or printed brass dial faces, and maker signatures characteristic of 19th-century craftsmen.

This piece works well mounted on a dark-painted feature wall in a study or hallway, adding a touch of maritime history and industrial texture to contemporary or traditional schemes.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture fluctuations to preserve the wood finish and brass components. Dust the glass gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners on the dial or casing.
