Parisian Summer, July 1913: An Impressionist View of L'île Aux Cygnes at Passy, French Belle Epoque Oil on Canvas

1900 - 1920
Description

Dated July 1913 on the verso, this luminous oil offers a rare, intimate glimpse of the Seine at Passy, specifically looking toward the evocatively named l'Île aux Cygnes (the Isle of the Swans). Painted exactly one year before the outbreak of the Great War, it captures the final, sun-drenched moments of the Belle Époque.

The composition shows a traditional Parisian river barge moored beneath the architectural shadow of a bridge—likely the Pont de Passy. It is a scene of industrial poeticism: the ruggedness of the river trade softened by the shimmering, dappled light of a French midsummer.

The artist demonstrates a sophisticated Post-Impressionist hand, utilising a palette of celadon greens, deep ochres, and slate blues to render the movement of the water.

The framing of the scene—viewed from a low vantage point on the towpath—creates an immersive experience, pulling the viewer into the cool, shaded respite of the riverfront.

Measuring 27 x 41 cm and unsigned, our painting is dated and situated to the verso and presented in its original period frame. The overall framed size is 47 x 33 cm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Impressionist landscape paintings from this period are defined by swift, expressive brushwork, an emphasis on atmospheric light, and plein-air depictions of everyday life, rivers, and urban architectural settings.

Artisans typically used oil paints ground with linseed oil applied directly to stretched linen or cotton canvas, framed in carved timber mouldings finished with gold leaf or metal gilt.

Authentic pieces feature natural age craquelure across the paint surface, historical oxidation on the rear of the canvas and wooden stretcher bars, and Period-correct framing construction techniques.

Display the painting as a focal point above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table, paired with subtle picture lighting to accentuate the textured paintwork and gilded frame.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity. Dust the carved frame lightly using a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning.
