FAQs

Sheffield plating originated in the 18th century in Sheffield, England, involving the fusion of a thin sheet of sterling silver onto a copper base, a technique later replaced by electroplating in the 19th century.

These pieces typically consist of a base metal core, such as copper or a white metal alloy, finished with an electroplated silver layer and featuring soldered pierced gallery rails and applied feet.

Authenticity is determined by examining makers marks, wear patterns that reveal the base metal underneath, construction joints, and traditional weight and hand-finished detailing.

An antique tray provides a contrasting reflective metallic surface that can be used on a sideboard or coffee table to corral smaller decorative objects, glassware, or candles.

Preserve silver plated items by cleaning them infrequently with non-abrasive silver polish, handling them with soft cloths to avoid scratching, and storing them in low-humidity environments.
