An aneroid barometer is a device used for measuring atmospheric pressure without using liquid, invented in the mid-19th century and widely adopted during the Victorian era for domestic weather forecasting.

Traditional Victorian barometers typically feature a turned timber case such as oak or mahogany, a brass bezel or housing, and an enamelled or porcelain dial protected by glass.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate typography on the dial, hand-carved or turned wooden cases with natural patina, and mechanical brass movements rather than modern quartz components.

An antique barometer adds historical interest and texture when hung singly on a panelled wall or grouped within a gallery arrangement in a study, hallway, or living room.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent timber cracking, and gently dust the wooden case and glass bezel with a soft, dry cloth.
