Description

While it dates to roughly 1930, the style of this beautiful commode is a direct homage to the Louis XVI (Neoclassical) period of the late 18th century.

The "trompe l'oeil" (trick of the eye) drawer configuration —where three long drawers are disguised as six smaller ones—is a classic French cabinet making technique.

It provides the practical storage of a wide commode while maintaining the delicate, symmetrical proportions required by Neoclassical aesthetics. This is achieved using vertical brass "reeds" in the center of the drawer fronts making the commode appear elegant and architectural.

It is a quality piece, made of mahogany , with a lovely thick marble top and beautiful gilded brass fittings. All three locks are working with their keys.

Originating in the late seventeenth century, the commode evolved from a low cupboard into a sophisticated chest of drawers favoured in elite French interiors for its combination of utility and decorative elegance.

These pieces typically feature solid wood frames with fine timber veneers, frequently surmounted by a shaped marble slab and accented with cast brass or bronze mounts.

Authenticity is assessed by examining traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, the natural ageing and patination of the timber, and the construction methods of the drawer linings and backboards.

A classic commode serves as a striking focal point in a modern scheme when paired with minimalist contemporary lighting and abstract art to create a balanced contrast of eras.

Maintain the timber using natural beeswax applied sparingly, and protect the marble surface from acidic spills and moisture by using coasters and mats.
