Description

A classic Parisian winter street scene by Édouard Cortès, titled La Madeleine, depicting figures and motor cars moving through snow-covered streets beneath softly glowing shopfronts. The composition is animated by Cortès’ masterful handling of light and reflection, with warm interior illumination contrasting against the cool tones of the winter atmosphere. Architectural detail and lively street activity combine to create a richly atmospheric and highly decorative work.

Oil on canvas, signed lower right, and presented in a richly carved gilt frame with an original titled artist’s plaque. The painting is in very good condition and represents an excellent example of Cortès’ sought-after Paris scenes.

FAQs

French Impressionism focused on capturing light and atmospheric conditions using rapid brushwork and a bright palette, often depicting contemporary urban and rural scenes.

These artworks were typically created using oil paints applied to stretched canvas, housed in elaborately carved and gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining canvas ageing, pigment composition, artist signatures, framing construction, and consulting catalogue raisonnes or art experts.

An antique painting can serve as a focal point in a modern room, anchored by neutral walls and illuminated with dedicated picture lighting to highlight its texture and colours.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and dusting the canvas gently with a soft, dry brush.
