Description

A charming and well-matched pair of floral still life paintings by Cecil Kennedy, each depicting delicately arranged blooms set against soft, graduated grounds. One composition shows a vibrant bouquet of roses and mixed flowers, the other a vase of white blossoms with accents of red and blue, both painted with the artist’s characteristic precision and subtle use of colour.

Each work is oil on canvas, signed lower right, and presented in finely carved and gilt frames which complement the paintings beautifully. The canvases measure 7.5 inches by 9.5 inches each. Both paintings are in very good condition and display particularly well as a pair.

FAQs

Floral still life painting gained prominence during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, where artists focused heavily on realism and symbolic botanical arrangements, a tradition that continued into the 20th century with artists like Cecil Kennedy.

Authentic period works typically utilise oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames finished with gesso.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, pigment oxidisation, craquelure under magnification, artist signatures, and the construction methods of the stretcher bars and framing.

These works bring warmth and classic texture to modern spaces, working well as focal points above mantelpieces, within traditional gallery walls, or juxtaposed against minimalist neutral backgrounds.

To preserve oil paintings, maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and avoid touching the painted surface.
