The Imari style originates from Japanese export porcelain produced in Arita and shipped through the port of Imari. English factories, particularly Royal Crown Derby, adopted these distinctive cobalt blue, iron-red, and gilt designs during the 18th and 19th centuries, creating their own interpretations like the famous 1128 pattern.

Royal Crown Derby pieces are crafted from fine bone china, composed of bone ash, feldspar, and kaolin. The intricate designs are hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue and iron-red, then meticulously highlighted with hand-applied 22-carat gold gilding before multiple kiln firings.

Authentic pieces feature factory backstamps underneath the glaze, which changed over the decades to indicate specific production periods and date ciphers. Hand-painted pattern numbers, such as 1128, are often scripted in red or gold alongside the makers crown mark.

Antique Imari porcelain adds rich colour and historical texture to contemporary spaces when displayed within glass cabinets, on open shelving, or used as accent pieces on sideboards. The vibrant palette of cobalt and iron-red pairs well with neutral tones and metallic accents.

Antique porcelain with gold gilding should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Avoid dishwashers, harsh scrubbing brushes, and soaking for extended periods to protect the delicate enamel and gold leaf.
