Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A reverse glass mezzotint is a specialized printmaking technique popular in the 18th century where a printed mezzotint impression was pasted face-down onto a piece of glass. The paper backing was carefully rubbed away until only the ink film remained attached to the glass, after which hand-applied oil colours were painted onto the reverse side to illuminate the print from behind.

These works were constructed using hand-blown flat glass plate, paper mezzotint prints, vegetable gums or turpentine varnishes for adhesion, and oil-based paint pigments applied to the back. They were typically housed in moulded softwood or hardwood frames, often finished with ebonised paint or gold leaf.

Authentic period examples often display characteristics such as air bubbles, waves, or slight imperfections in the hand-blown glass plate, natural oxidisation on the frame backing, and subtle craquelure or shrinkage in the paint layer visible on the reverse side. The plate glass is typically thinner and less perfectly flat than modern glass.

Interior designers often place dark-framed Georgian portraits in contemporary settings to create contrast against clean-lined furniture and neutral walls. Positioning a reverse glass print above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or framed within a gallery wall of mixed mediums brings texture, rich tones, and historical depth to modern rooms.

Keep reverse glass prints away from direct sunlight, dampness, and fluctuating temperatures to prevent paint lifting or glass deterioration. Clean the front glass surface gently using a dry microfibre cloth or a lightly moistened cotton swab, avoiding liquid cleansers or moisture contact with the reverse backing.
