This early 20th century Austrian cold painted bronze desk tidy originates from 1910 in the Vienna Bronze style. The piece comprises a brown equine figure mounted on a carved oval green onyx tray, complete with detailed bridlework and a polychrome finish. Visible features include natural stone veining across the dish, hoof detailing on the standing animal, and polished metallic highlights on the harness hardware. Measuring 15.2 cm high, 24.8 cm wide, and 12.8 cm deep, the accessory suits a traditional gentleman's library or a home office desk. It functions practically as a stationery tidy or desk organiser while adding an equestrian decorative accent to a workspace surface.

FAQs

Cold-painted bronzes are cast bronze sculptures finished with multiple layers of unfired oil paint, enamel, or lacquer. This technique originated in Vienna during the late nineteenth century, resulting in polychrome decorative items depicting animals, figures, and orientalist scenes.

The bronze figures were cast using the lost-wax process, after which artisans applied cold paint directly onto the raw metal surface. These figures were then secured using threaded pins or screws to carved mineral bases, such as onyx or marble, which provided weight and functionality.

Authentic nineteenth and early twentieth-century Vienna bronzes often feature foundry marks, stamped numbers, or maker initials such as those of Franz Xaver Bergman. They display natural paint wear in elevated areas alongside detailed cold-chasing work in the underlying metal.

A bronze desk tidy functions on a home office desk to hold pens or paperclips, or on an entryway console as a dish for keys and small items. Placing natural stone and metal accents on dark wood or lacquered surfaces creates tactile contrast.

Clean the piece gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth to remove dust without disturbing delicate paint layers. Avoid water, solvent cleaners, or abrasive polishes, as liquid chemicals will strip the unfired cold paint and dull the porous onyx base.
