FAQs

Limoges enamel panels are vitreous enamel artworks produced in the city of Limoges, France, a renowned centre for enamelling since the Middle Ages, with a major revival during the 19th century.

These pieces are typically created using copper as a base, upon which successive layers of finely ground coloured glass paste, or enamel, are applied and fired in a kiln, often highlighted with fine gilt detailing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic counter-enamelling on the reverse, hand-painted details with depth in the translucent layers, and sometimes artist signatures or maker marks typical of the period.

Such panels serve as focal points when mounted on a gallery wall alongside contemporary prints or placed on a mantlepiece to introduce historical texture and rich metallic tones to a room.

Preserve these items by keeping them away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and cleaning only with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to avoid damaging the delicate glass surface.
