Regency Painted Silhouette by Charles Rosenberg

19th century
Description

A fine silhouette reverse painted on glass by Charles Rosenberg of Bath. The silhouette is beautifully done with the sitter in profile dressed in high Regency fashion. The silhouette portrays Susannah Hyde Gale 1749-1823 the wife of Admiral Alan Gardner, first Lord Gardner 1742-1809. The work was created by the famous silhouette portraitist Charles Rosenberg of Bath, he was painter to the nobility and thought to be of Austrian origin having arrived in this country with the entourage of Queen Charlotte. Rosenberg eventually settled in Bath running a very successful business creating likenesses of the great and good who arrived in the city for the summer season. The silhouette is in excellent condition retaining the original mount and frame which just has the odd nibble around the edge. The reverse of the frame has information regarding the sitter as well as the original trade label of Rosenberg. The whole is an excellent example of a Regency period silhouette. C.1800.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency silhouette portrait is a profile image created during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, depicting a subject in solid dark profile against a light background, executed via cutting or brushwork.

Artists painted profiles using India ink, soot, or dark pigment on paper, card, plaster, or glass, which were then placed within gilded wood, pine, or papier-mache frames with brass hanging fittings.

Authentic period silhouettes exhibit signs of age such as paper foxing, uneven hand-blown glass, period square-headed nails or backing papers, and occasional trade labels from recognized artists.

Small-scale profile miniatures function effectively when arranged in gallery wall groupings on narrow wall spaces or displayed on bookshelf ledges alongside period ceramics.

Keep paper silhouettes away from direct sunlight and damp environments, avoid cleaning solvents on gilded frames, and dust the glass gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
