This fine pair of antique French figural studies of farm labourers in bronze, are full of energy and realism, and were cast by E Colin & Co. of Paris in the latter part of the 19th Century. ''The Sower'' and ''Le Faucher'' (The Cutter or Reaper) were originally sculptured by Jean Gautherin (1840 - 1890). Looking at their construction and appealing patina, I feel that they were cast close to the date of their conception. These powerful studies particularly appeal to me because they fall squarely within French Realism, a movement that shunned the romantic and the classical, to focus on accurate and gritty depictions of everyday life and the working class.
