Pair Of Antique French Figural Bronzes Of Farm Labourers After Jean Gautherin

This fine pair of antique French figural studies of farm labourers in bronze, are full of energy and realism, and were cast by E Colin & Co. of Paris in the latter part of the 19th Century. ''The Sower'' and ''Le Faucher'' (The Cutter or Reaper) were originally sculptured by Jean Gautherin (1840 - 1890). Looking at their construction and appealing patina, I feel that they were cast close to the date of their conception. These powerful studies particularly appeal to me because they fall squarely within French Realism, a movement that shunned the romantic and the classical, to focus on accurate and gritty depictions of everyday life and the working class. These attractive studies in bronze will sit comfortably in a period or contemporary setting.
