During the Meiji period (18681912), Japanese metalworkers shifted from crafting traditional samurai weaponry to producing decorative art objects, known as okimono, for both local appreciation and Western export. Master artisans applied advanced casting and chasing techniques to create realistic depictions of animals, nature, and mythical figures.

These bronzes were primarily crafted using the lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue), which allowed for high levels of anatomical detail and surface texture. After casting, the figures were hand-chiselled and finished with chemical patinations to achieve deep brown or dark tone variations.

Authentic pieces feature heavy casting, crisp surface chasing, hand-finished anatomical details, and naturalistic movement. Many authentic sculptures bear an incised or cast signature seal (mei) from the artist or foundry on the underside or flank of the figure.

A substantial bronze animal figure serves as a grounding focal point on a large wooden sideboard, executive desk, or fireplace mantel. Complement the dark bronze patina with natural timber tones, leather upholstery, and neutral background palette.

Dust the sculpture regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or lint-free cloth. To preserve the original patination and prevent oxidisation, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently once dry, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners.
