Description

Large 19th century Fereghan carpets of any colour and design are becoming increasingly hard to source. Dark blue Herati design examples do appear on occasion. So I was delighted to find this beauty recently in the English countryside. The repeating design of stylised fans and floral ornaments is delightful, and is enhanced by ivory background in the field and delicate range of secondary colours. Note the gorgeous terracotta main border with the classic Fereghan design of palmettes, blossoms and meandering vines. This is an attractive and decorative country house style carpet in an excellent size. The overall condition is good. The ends and sides are intact, and the selvages are original. The pile is generally good throughout with areas of minor wear in places. If you are looking for a decorative antique carpet, this rare beauty is a great choice, and would enhance any number of settings.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Fereghan carpets originate from the West Persia region and are characterised by fine wool, intricate repetitive motifs such as the Herati pattern, and balanced colour palettes.

These pieces are traditionally hand-knotted using locally sourced wool on cotton foundations, employing natural vegetable dyes to achieve enduring hues.

Authenticity is determined by examining knot density, natural dye variations, hand-spun wool characteristics, and characteristic wear patterns on the foundation.

An antique carpet anchors a space by adding texture and historical contrast, pairing effectively with both minimalist modern furniture and traditional period pieces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional specialist cleaning, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight.
