Description

1929 silver Kays Keyless “Triumph” pocket watch.

William Kay set up Kays of Worcester in 1890. Customers bought items from handbills in a folder and initially the goods on offer were limited to jewellery, watches, clocks and household items. Eventually William’s son Jack took over the running of the business, just a year after this particular watch was made. The company continued to expand and trade successfully, becoming one of Worcester’s largest employers.

This particular watch has Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. It is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch itself measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case backs for Birmingham 1929 with a case maker’s mark for the Dennison Watch Case Company, a prolific case manufacturer who supplied various watch makers. The case is in nice condition, and has crisp engine turned detail to the back along with a central vacant cartouche.

The acrylic lens is in lovely condition.

The signed dial is in beautiful condition with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Keyless winding mechanisms, introduced in the mid-19th century and perfected by the early 20th century, replaced traditional separate keys with a crown winding and setting system, greatly improving convenience and water resistance for daily wear.

These timepieces typically featured sterling silver or gold cases, enamel dials with painted numerals, tempered steel hands, and intricate brass or nickel-alloy mechanical movements containing ruby jewelled bearings.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmark stamps on the inside of the case for metal purity and date letters, inspecting the movement serial numbers, and checking the manufacturer signatures on both the dial and inner dust cover.

A pocket watch can be displayed on a desktop or mantelpiece using a dedicated glass dome or brass display stand, serving as a sophisticated conversational object in a study or library.

Proper preservation involves keeping the movement away from moisture and extreme magnetic fields, winding them gently at consistent intervals if operational, and having them professionally serviced by a horologist every few years.
