Antique Caucasian Karabagh Runner

1900 - 1920
Description

This colourful expressive Karabagh runner is a treasure trove of artistic imagination. The ivory borders are made up of interlocked blossoms, that sway side to side as if being blown by the wind, an effect that is also recreated in the indigo field with the drop-like 'botehs.' This section is really brought to life through the pastel coloured rosettes, and the smaller flower heads that grow in-between, a unique addition by its creator. Overall, the dynamic feel of this rug gives vast energy and a rich glow of colour.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karabagh rugs originate from the southern Caucasus region and are characterized by their long runner formats, vibrant natural dye palettes, and expressive geometric or floral designs, frequently incorporating repeating boteh (paisley) patterns.

These carpets were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation, colored with traditional vegetable and plant-based dyes such as madder root and indigo.

Authentic antique pieces feature soft wool construction, slight irregular variations in dye tones known as abrash, symmetrical double-knotting, and classic Caucasian motifs such as stylised botehs or geometric medallions.

A Caucasian runner works exceptionally well in transitional spaces like hallways, entryways, or narrow landings, introducing visual length, texture, and rich colour contrast against light timber floors or muted wall palettes.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating beater bar, place a non-slip underlay beneath the rug to reduce wear, and employ specialist professional rug cleaners for spot-cleaning and washing.
