5 X Original Antique Late 19th & Early 20th Century Watercolour Paintings Cottages at Water End, Clifton, York Historic Yorkshire Architecture Landscapes

19th century
Description

Type of artwork: Collection of Original Watercolours – Mrs Hedley’s Cottage, Water End, Clifton, York

4 x Watercolours on paper (one with additional verso sketch, plus a small photo)

Artist and Signature: Colonel Harold Percy Ditmas (1853–1937) was a solicitor and auxiliary officer who commanded the Durham Artillery from 1895, later serving with distinction in the Boer War and World War I. He was granted the honorary rank of Colonel in 1901. A member of a long-established York military family, Ditmas was also a skilled watercolourist. Signing his works “H.P.D.”, he produced a series of topographical views from the 1870s to the early 20th century, recording Clifton, York, Shoeburyness, and other places connected with his life and service. Today his paintings are valued both as decorative works and as important historical records of vanished or altered locations. Plus one painting signed Hughes

Inscribed and Dated between 1876 and 1919

The timber-framed cottage, recorded here in 1876, later fell into disrepair and was demolished in the 1920s. These works are therefore of strong local historical importance as records of a lost York landmark.

Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Mounted on original backing (unframed).

Condition Report: Some foxing, toning discolouration and chipped mounts consistent with age. Paper remains sound and watercolour paintings retain good strength of colour. One verso watercolour (1909) is an additional surprise feature. Please study all photographs for details.

Size of each painting (image only, average) 13 x 18 cm
