Description

Mark Senior was born in 1862 at Hanging Heaton, Dewsbury. He studied at Wakefield School of Art and later worked with Isaac Faulkner Bird in Leeds. Senior is famous for his involvement with the Staithes Group of artists who painted on the Yorkshire Coast around Whitby, Runswick Bay and Staithes. He also studied at the Slade, where he met Whistler, Philip Wilson Steer, Henry Tonks and Fred Brown introducing him to contemporary French painting. Thus his pictures have a cosmopolitan feel which equates with those of his better known contemporaries and friends. His pictures were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892 to 1924. Mark Senior had a range of patrons including Sam Wilson, a Leeds worsted coat manufacturer. Together with Sir George Clausen he advised Wilson in building up one of the most important collections of ‘turn of the century’ English art. This is now housed at Leeds City Art Gallery. His generosity to his fellow artists was publicly recognised by Rowland Hill…”Mark Senior was one of those men for whom everybody had a great deal of affection and he often helped his fellow painters in a practical way.”

The present painting "Runswick Bay" is a lovely little oil sketch on panel. Measuring 6"x 9" it has the artist's monogram on the back and is framed giving an overall size of 10"x 13".

This style is characterised by visible brushwork, an emphasis on light and atmospheric conditions, and en plein air techniques capturing regional landscapes and coastal scenes.

Artisans typically utilised prepared wood panels or millboards as supports, applying traditional oil-based pigments formulated with linseed oil and natural resins.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the panel substrate, craquelure patterns, pigment analysis, artist signatures, and provenance documentation matching historical exhibition records.

Such works serve as focal points when paired with simple, neutral wall colours and directed picture lighting, bridging traditional depth with contemporary minimalism.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity levels, avoidance of direct sunlight, protection from extreme temperature fluctuations, and periodic dusting by conservation professionals.
