Cotswold Oriental Rugs has dated this piece to the 1890s.
Antique Ersari Turkmen chuval of very large size, with unusual turreted gul design.
Late 19th century.
There are four incomplete turreted guls at the edges of the chuval and four half chuval guls at the sides. The elem is of the small shrub design, or as it is often called 'dancing ladies', this design is found on chuval by both the Ersari and Saryk Turkmen. Note the pairs of small amulets in the field, a sign of purity. The chuval is finely woven with excellent wool, at some time in its history its original plain weave back has been removed, traces can be seen as a kilim at the lower end.
Outstanding condition with very slight even wear and full pile.
Hand washed and ready for display, this chuval face would make a superb floor rug.
