C1840 Oil Portrait General John Lambert In Armour New Model Army Commander
£7,500 $10,052 €8,786
General John Lambert, New Model Army Commander (1619–1684)
Mid-19th Century English School, after Robert Walker
Composition & Technique
This commanding c.1840 mid-19th century oil on panel portrait presents General John Lambert in bust-length, framed within a painted oval cartouche. He is depicted in a polished steel cuirass enriched with gilt trim, offset by a finely rendered lace cravat. Closely following Robert Walker’s 17th-century prototype, the work reflects Victorian fascination with Civil War heroes. Strong contrasts and crisp highlights—hallmarks of revivalist portraiture—intensify Lambert’s martial authority.
About the Sitter
General John Lambert (1619–1684) was one of the most brilliant commanders of the New Model Army. He distinguished himself at Marston Moor (1644) and proved decisive at Preston (1648). A skilled soldier and statesman, Lambert drafted the Instrument of Government (1653)—Britain’s first written constitution.
Though offered supreme power, h...e declined, staying loyal to the Commonwealth. After Cromwell’s death he attempted to preserve the republic, but following the Restoration he was imprisoned for 24 years, dying on Guernsey in 1684. Admired even by his enemies, Lambert endures as a figure of integrity, intellect, and tragic fate.
About the Artist
The likeness derives from Robert Walker (d. 1658), Cromwell’s favored portraitist and chief artistic chronicler of the Commonwealth. Walker’s portraits of Cromwell, Fairfax, Ireton, and Lambert defined the visual record of England’s republican experiment. This Victorian interpretation reflects the 19th-century revival of Civil War themes, when collectors—spurred by writers like Thomas Carlyle—sought faithful recreations of Walker’s sitters.
Signature
Unsigned, as typical of 19th-century English School works after Old Master prototypes.
