Description

This delightful small Bakshaish weaving from North-West Persia has a classic medallion design. But the design is somewhat out of character. The large floral anchor medallion is drawn in a very naturalistic manner as are some of the other floral elements, including the botehs in the spandrels and blossoms in the field. However the soft wool quality and wonderful colours which includes a really subtle terracotta and two shades of pale blue are very much in the Bakshaish repertoire. It is a really decorative little carpet which coupled with lovely sapphire blue border and the squarish format makes it a rare treasure. Clean and in very good condition. There are some minor spots of repiling which have been executed very professionally.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Persian Carpet to the 1880s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

North-West Persian carpets from the late 19th century typically feature geometric medallions, stylised floral motifs, and bold angular designs influenced by regional tribal traditions.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, foundation warps of cotton or wool, and natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregularities in knotting and symmetry due to hand production, natural abrash colour variations in the wool, and characteristic wear patterns consistent with age.

An antique carpet can anchor a modern or minimalist living space by adding textural contrast, warmth, and historical depth through its rich palette and intricate patterns.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without rotary brushes, professional specialist cleaning when necessary, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight to prevent dye fading.
